Brightspace Login (Guest accounts)
D2L Brightspace is the learning management system used by RWU University College and many distance courses. Currently the login credentials for Brightspace are unique to this system and separate from all other RWU accounts, including all single sign-on services like RWU Gmail, RogerCentral, Outlook, etc. All users newly enrolled in Brightspace should receive an email notification to the email account they submitted for registration when their user account is created on the system. They should also receive a second notification to their email account when they are enrolled in a Brightspace course. If these email notifications do not appear in the user's Inbox, then the Junk and Spam folders should be checked in case the messages were redirected. The usernames are the first part of the email address before the @ sign. For example if someone had an email address jsmith1232@gmail.com their username would be jsmith1232. Some user accounts will be enrolled with an RWU Gmail account - for example jdole235@g.rwu.edu - so they would use their RWU username before the @ symbol which in this example would be jdole235. Please note that those users with an RWU Gmail or Outlook account will not have the same password for Brightspace as all the other RWU systems unless they set it up to match in their initial login. The notifications are sent from the address: d2lsupport@rwu.brightspace.com with a subject line Roger Williams University: Enrollment Confirmation. The message will look like this: Hi {FirstName}, You have been enrolled in Roger Williams University Brightspace with the following username: {UserName}. To begin using the site: Set up a password Log into Roger Williams Brightspace using your username {Username} and password Open this message in your email. To set up a password, click on the Set up a password link. A new tab will open that will allow you to type in the username that was included in the initial message and then type your preferred password and retype the same password. Click on Submit. You may now return to the https://rwu.brightspace.com home page and type in your username and password. To log in: Open Chrome or Firefox Navigate to https://rwu.brightspace.com Type in your username as displayed in the initial message Type in the password you set up Click on Log in The second notification of enrollment is sent from the same address with the subject line: {Course name}: Enrollment Confirmation Roger Williams University. The message will read: Hi {FirstName}, You have been enrolled in {course code} - {course name} for {Roger Williams University. To access {course code} - {course name}, log into {Roger Williams Brightspace} using your username and password, then select {course name} from your list of courses. You should see your course listed on your Brightspace home page as soon as you log in. Click on the link to the course to enter the site. Resetting Your Forgotten Brightspace Password If you forget your password follow these steps: Navigate to https://rwu.brightspace.com Click on the blue Forgot your password? link Type in your Brightspace username Click Submit A message will be sent to your email account containing a link to Reset your password. Click on this link in your email message. You will be brought to a Choose a new password form that will allow you to type your username and a preferred password. Click Submit to save your new password. A confirmation page will appear to acknowledge that you have successfully reset your password. Click on the link to the login page to return to the Brightspace landing page and log in with your new password. If you do not see an email notification within a few minutes in your email account this may be because: You mistyped your username Your account's external email address is not set up or incorrect This request is too soon after your last request The email was delayed or routed to your Junk or Spam folder If you have reset your password and you are still not able to log in it may be because your account is locked or inactive. If this is the case, send email to Linda Beith at lbeith@rwu.edu or Shawn Platt at splatt@rwu.edu for assistance. Please note that the MediaTech Desk does not have access to reset Brightspace accounts. Changing Your Brightspace Password If you did not forget your password but just wish to change it: Log in to your Brightspace account as usual Click on your name in the top right corner of the Brightspace window Select Account Settings Click on the Change Password option under General Settings Type in your old password and then your new password Click on Save You are now able to log in with your new password

Brightspace 'Not Authorized' Message
Students and faculty must log in to Brightspace using their O365 credentials. So, their O365 accounts must be in place in order to log in successfully. It may take a day or so for a new student's O365 account to be created, even if they have a username and password as well as an RWU Gmail account in place after registering for a course. There is a Colleague process that runs every night that updates Brightspace enrollments. The process first adds any student or faculty member's O365 account to the Brightspace User Database if they have never been on Brightspace. Once the user has been added to the User Database, the next step in the process is to add the user to the course. If the user has not been added to the Brightspace User Database, they will get a message saying they are not authorized to log in to Brightspace even if they have an active O365 account. This issue will normally be resolved within a day or so. If the user can log in to Brightspace and can see their course(s) but not access them, it is because they have been successfully added to the User Database and have logged in correctly with their O365 credentials however the Start date of the course is in the future. The Start date should be noted on each course so that students will know when the course will be available. All courses open at 12:01 AM of that Start date unless the instructor changes it.
