Spotting a Phishing Email

Modified on: Sat, Jul 20 2024 3:22 PM

Phishing emails are fraudulent emails attempting to steal personal or sensitive data. If you suspect an email is phishing, forward to spam@rwu.edu. Reporting these emails keeps the RWU community safe.

Below are the top signs of a phishing email. Begin by asking yourself if you were expecting this email.

Top Signs of a Phish

  • Email coming from an external source. EXT will be in the subject line.
  • Asking for security or password information.
  • Linking to an external page.
  • Pretending to be an internal person sending potentially important or time-sensitive information.
  • Spelling errors in names and email addresses.

Below is a recreated Phishing Email sent to the RWU community. The Red Boxes indicate signs of a phishing attempt.
